OUR HISTORY - Founded in 1998
by two-time survivor, Lyn Wasserman, Atlanta-based Breast Friends
has become one of the premier breast cancer support networks in
Atlanta. The National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organization's "2007-04
Breast Cancer Resource List" lists Breast Friends as one of
only three organizations in the country offering a 24-hour toll-free
National support "hotline" to breast cancer patients and
their families. Breast Friends has been a proud Grantee of The Greater
Atlanta Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
for four years, and sits on the Board of The Georgia Breast Cancer
Coalition & Fund, as well as the Medicines Work Coalition (PhaRMA).
Breast Friends is actively involved in the Georgia Cancer Coalition,
and a charter member of the Cancer Survivors Leadership Counsel
of Georgia.
Breast Friends has provided support and assistance
to women in over 52 communities in the Metro Atlanta area and across
Georgia, and provided telephone support to women in 42 states across
the country and in Canada. We have also provided e-mail support
to women in Italy, Senegal, Sydney, The United Kingdom, Malaysia,
Delhi, Romania, Antigua, and (Russian) Georgia.
Our network provides comfort, emotional support,
practical assistance and information to breast cancer patients and
their families on an "individual" basis, rather than in
a group setting. Breast Friends is made up of breast cancer survivors,
family members and friends of breast cancer patients, and community
partners, who know first hand, the benefits of receiving and giving
support.
OUR STAFF
Lyn Wasserman
Founder/Executive Director
Lyn
is a two-time breast cancer "victor" who was first diagnosed
in 1984. During treatment for a recurrence in 1996, Lyn received
emotional support from two breast cancer survivors. Discovering
that there was limited availability in Atlanta for this type of
"individualized" support , Lyn developed Breast Friends.
"Those two women were always available, no matter what time
I called. To this day, I have no idea what I would have done without
their special brand of support." Lyn's vision went beyond telephone
support. Breast Friends now offers a full array of services, especially
for underserved breast cancer families. Lyn has made numerous appearances
on local television and radio, and has appeared nationally, on CNN
and NBC, promoting the importance of support as essential tool in
recovery, and defending Breast Self-Examination (BSE), as an early
detection tool.
