First I Cry

Receiving help is the journey

Women find ways to care for others in many ways. We are here to offer you a path to care for yourself in this difficult time. Seeking help from friends and family and volunteers is a life affirming choice that you can make. Identifying the specific ways in which you will need help can, in turn, allow those who want to help you to really make a difference in the days ahead. Asking for help is not easy for most women. Asking for what will be most helpful to you is what you need to do, and what others most want to hear from you. The first step is often the hardest.

Our “First I Cry” packets offer a way for you to take that first step.

The packet includes a “Welcome to the Sisterhood” message, a handkerchief silk-screened with a sweet logo to remind you that when tears come, there is a sisterhood that supports you. The packet includes a list of contacts for area support groups and a self referral card for our Volunteer Match program.

The most important piece inside the packet is a sealed envelope with the instructions to “Give this to someone who cares about you.” In the envelope is a special message to the person you chose along with some practical tips on how they can help you. The longest journey begins with a single step. This step, towards helping yourself and letting others help you, is that first step.

In our affiliate areas, these packets are distributed through hospitals and clinics and other places where a cancer diagnose is likely to be presented.  If you are outside our affiliate area, we are happy to mail you a packet.  It will not contain the local support groups, but you can use the resources tab on the web-site to find support groups in your area.
